Diem asked for more American money, military advisers, and war materiel to build up his army. The Americans complied. U.S. President John F. Kennedy sent the first of the troops after the DRVN unified the South Vietnamese communist insurgents in an organization called the National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam on 20 December 1960. The front had long and historic roots in Vietnam. It brought together Communists and non-Communists in an umbrella organization. Membership was open to anyone who opposed Ngo Dinh Diem.
