Many other species failed to show mirror directed behavior, includingsome monkey species, which suggests to some that there is acorresponding cognitive mechanism that the above species, but notothers, enjoy. However, it has been pointed out that there areecological and biological constraints on this test; not all speciesare visually oriented, and some find eyes aversive (this was theexplanation for studies that failed to show MSR in gorillas). For adiscussion of these issues, see the collection of articles inSelf-awareness in Animals and Humans (Parker .1994).
