Thesis: By the early 17th century, the English established permanent settlements in North America. Investors hoping for profit founded the Jamestown colony in 1607. Further north, two sets of settlers, the Pilgrims in Plymouth and the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay were motivated by their deep religious conviction as they brought families and entire communities to create a Bible commonwealth. In both New England and the Chesapeake, the English experienced strained relations with native Americans and the difficulties of sustaining their communities in the harsh new environment.
