To begin our study of themes of love and lust in The Great Gatsby, I had students journal silently at the beginning of class (Prompt: How are love and lust similar and/or different? How do they play into the American Dream and the ideas of “wealth” and “success,” if at all?). We followed this journal up with a class discussion that proved lively and fruitful; students had a lot of opinions and we heard from even the quietest and most recalcitrant students. Below, you will find some samples of journal entries from various students.
