In the year the triumvirate began to function the Politburo was composedof Lenin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Trotzky, Bukharin, Tomsky, and Stalin. TheLenin-Zinoviev-Kamenev "troika" had, of course, been dominantso long as Lenin was active, but now Zinoviev and Kamenev, as thesurviving members of the "troika," regarded themselves asLenin's rightful successors, and they looked on Trotzky as acompetitor. Into this picture Stalin insinuated himself. Heallied himself with Kamenev and Zinoviev, and the three were ableto turn the Politburo against Trotsky. Stalin thus became the juniormember of the triumvirate. Trotzky describes the situation this way [(ibid) page 337] "Used as a counterweight against me, he was bolsteredand encouraged by Zinoviev and Kamenev, and to a lesser extent by Rykov,Bukharin and Tomsky.
