George Burroughs was sinful. That much is for certain. The possibility remains whether or not someone possessed by the devil would truly have the faculty to recite the Lord’s prayer, forgive his accusers, and bring people to tears with such dignified, peaceful articulation of his innocence. The crowd seemed fearful at the execution of George Burroughs, as though they had done something wrong. Fear is beginning to play into these trials, and perhaps it is playing a greater part than intended. The fact that a minister was executed certainly says a great deal about the Devil’s power. Salem must remember that the devil has the power to take over anyone’s soul—the richest of the rich, the poorest of the poor, the most and the least powerful. Yes, the trials do continue, and Salem shall soldier on through this difficult time, despite the evil that tints the air around us.
