The Yanomami believe in polygamy, which means that that the men can have more than one wife, but there are also monogamous marriages in the group. The idea of marriage in Yanomami society is often arranged and based on economic or survival strategies. Gender roles within the society are very important for these peoples. The wife or women of the society are treated as property and as servants to the men; bearing strong sons and serving the husband. Although it is clearly evident that the men are on a higher social rung; the husbands live with the wife’s family and are indebted to her family. They have a system of marriage that allows cross-cousin marriage among the community, which boosts political and societal progression, often even peace.
